Large Animal Services

At Kalona Veterinary Clinic, we know that animal companions come in all shapes, sizes and species. In addition to treating small household pets, we also offer comprehensive veterinary care services for large animals and livestock, including pigs, cattle, sheep and goats. We provide preventative care, as well as sick calls and emergency services, both within our clinic and on-site with our farm call services. Whether your large four-legged friend is around to keep you company, or is an integral part of your business and livelihood, we’re here to ensure that they remain as healthy as possible.

Swine Services

We specialize in the care and treatment of swine, both in terms of routine preventative health care as well as treatment of sick or injured animals. Our comprehensive swine care services include, but are not limited to:

  • Traditional disease diagnosis through post mortem exams, group dynamics, records, blood tests, oral fluid testing and other laboratory testing including in-house bacterial culturing
  • Facility ventilation analysis, including 24 hour temperature and humidity sensors with computer printouts
  • Health plans based on each site’s unique situation and disease status
  • Bio-security consultations
  • PQA level I-III, personnel and site certification and training
  • Production records analysis
  • Medication recommendations for feed and water
  • Annual or monthly herd health visits
  • Phone consultations
  • Vaccination protocols
  • Carcass and tissue evaluation at Tysons
  • SWAP and PADRAP (swine welfare and biosecurity audits)
  • Disease eradication
  • Disinfection protocols
  • PRRS ARC program consultation
  • Emergency services, including obstetrics and sudden deaths
  • Wean to finish systems
  • Nutritional analysis and in-house feed particle size testing

Our doctors can come to your facility, gather a complete history of what has been happening, and perform any post mortem exams that are needed, as well as recommend and implement treatment interventions and any preventative measures that may help in the future. For complicated cases, we collect samples and submit them to Iowa State University Veterinary Diagnostic Lab for a more definitive and precise diagnosis.

When it comes to providing the most effective care to our swine patients, we always try to look at the whole picture, then work with you to arrive at a solution that will give you the best outcome and return for your investment in our services, as well as medications and vaccines. We attempt to balance the risks and rewards with the expense of any program we recommend and work with the producer to discover what best suits his or her comfort level for risk versus full prevention. To that end, we emphasize group prevention with individual animal care and welfare.

At Kalona Veterinary Clinic, we strive to remain abreast of all the latest news and advancements in the swine industry, and pass that information on to our clients through advice, guidance and advanced treatment options. It makes us happy to be able to effectively diagnose, treat and prevent illness in our swine patients and provide them with the best chance of living healthy lives.
